NEW THIS WEEK

Responding to Maryland's Eviction Crisis

This week, I led the House Democratic Caucus in urging Governor Hogan to take immediate steps to protect Maryland renters who face eviction. Maryland's district courts began to hear Failure to Pay Rent cases for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic reached our state, and the recent reduction in federal unemployment benefits risk pushing more renters to the brink of homelessness.

In a joint letter, the House pressed the Governor to increase funding for the state's rental assistance program because he is the only one with the budgetary power to fund these programs during this fiscal year. We also asked him to provide funding for tenant legal assistance to ensure that every Marylander with a right to stay in their home is able to do so. And we urged him to collect detailed data to know which communities are most impacted and how to best respond to the eviction crisis.

Experts now project that hundreds of thousands of Marylanders may be at risk of eviction in the coming months and year. The Governor must take these common-sense actions now to limit the financial pain to so many working families and help our most vulnerable Marylanders stay in their homes.

New Baltimore County Election Updates

State and local partners are working together to ensure that residents in Baltimore County and across the can vote safely and securely. County Executive Johnny Olszewski and I announced new updates for the general election during a press conference this week.

Baltimore County is providing 13 secure ballot drop boxes and will operate 42 in-person voting sites on Election Day, November 3. Early Voting in Maryland has also been extended from Monday, October 26 through Monday, November 2.

Additionally, Baltimore County is adding $100 to the existing pay for all election judges. We need election judges to help ensure our elections are fair and accessible. Visit the Baltimore County government website to apply to become an election judge
